Anonymous: What do you know? — 6 Comments

  1. My knowledge of the group Anonymous is very limited and general. The menacing and creepy mask associated with the group is what stands out to me the most, and I believe that it is an effective representation the group’s goals, which include hacking and protesting significant organizations.

I know very little about hacking but I associate it with very technologically skilled individuals who are able to obtain access to otherwise private information online.

The words “Anonymous” and “hacking” give me a sense of unease because they involve secrecy and the obstruction of privacy.

I feel as though someone who self describes as a hacker must be very confident in what he/she does and feel a sense of entitlement to the private information being accessed; therefore, his/her rhetoric will most likely reflect those sentiments.

  2. I currently know nothing about the group Anonymous. What the title insinuates though is a blanket of anonymity where not one person can be held accountable. This title “Anonymous” diffuses self responsibility and instead leaves accountablity towards the group as a whole.
I know that hacking is a very prominent problem on the internet whether it be websites or personal accounts people have via Instagram, Twitter, et. Cetera. Hacking is being able to get into a certain domain without original consent from the owner.
I would assume a hacker’s rhetoric would have very vague terms and a passion for defiling personal property for the good of their so called group. I feel like the hackers feel a sense of entitlement towards getting into people’s personal property, that they have a right to do what they are doing.

  3. I remember hearing about Anonymous a couple of years ago and after that, I never really heard much else. The first time someone mentioned them to me, I was in class and a peer of mine who was very into computers said that he wanted to become a part of this group. I never really gave it much thought and to this day, Anonymous is not very present within my life. However, I recently saw online that they managed to sabotage thousands of ISIS social emdia accounts, which in my opinion, is rather admirable. ISIS uses social media (Twitter/Facebook) to deliver its orders and as such, taking these accounts down dented their operations to an extent. Often times, Anonymous gets a bad reputation for the mischievous endeavors online, however, this was an instance where they used their powers for a greater good.

  4. I am unsure of the group Anonymous, but I am aware that there are various hacking groups around the would that have many different goals in mind. Hearing anonymous maybe makes me think that these hackers are about protecting identities, and maybe that is why they try and steal others… To prove a point… Just guessing over hear! Hacking generally seems like a negative word to me, but maybe it always isn’t the case? I would be curious to learn about hackers who are actually generally trying to help others through there hacking and not just themselves or a small group of people. I think shows like 24 always portray hackers as people who are crazy and are trying to hurt others or try and reap the benefits of other people and their mistakes. I feel like a hackers rhetoric would be very in you face. Hackers seem to follow a passion of sorts and they usually seem to want to make other people feel their passion. In films, they do it through violence. In real life? I am not sure, but if I had to guess I would say very direct.

  5. Personally I have never heard about the group, Anonymous, and I do not know anything about hacking, except for the fact that it breaks through firewalls of the computer that enable you to access certain files.that is the extent that I know of the word hacker, but when I hear the word how I can I think of someone who is extremely intelligent and knows the ins and outs of hardware and software computer. The rhetoric that I would expect from someone to self describes himself as a hacker is one who is keen in the digital world, and you simply reap the benefits of thatThe digital world. I think personally that people who are hackers are individuals who don’t have something to do, and look towards the computer as an excuse to do something to entertain their time.

The word hacker similar to the word deep in that the only difference is the realm in which they perform the stealing or criminal act. Similarly the criminals the reason why criminals do what they do, is because they are bored, and do not have something to preoccupy their time such as school, sports, or other social activities. Hackers are an exact parallel, they are bored individuals that have nothing better to do, except to go on the computer, and find ways to break did your boundaries, and firewalls in regards to their own self interest.

  6. I don’t know much about them or about hacking. And I think what I know is mostly negative whereas I don’t fully understand their mission or their goals. As a hacker I expect them to be very attached to a computer and very IT smart. I imagine them having an extended knowledge about in the internet and what they are able to do. I find it very interesting as we often thing that the internet is a safe place, and we have so much information stored. And here we have people who can change all that very quickly. The world hacker does not incline something specific for me more then the picture I might have of a hacker. I believe that the word has a negative connotation and many times we think of a hacker as someone who steals I think. I know about the organisation Anonymous in the sense that I knew they existed but I did not know what they were doing more specifically. I don’t respond in a special way towards the word anonymous more then I assume that there is a reason for choosing to be anonymous.
