Cup noodles by Nadia

Hello everyone, my names Nadia and I’m a Junior here at CSU Dominguez Hills. My major is Global Studies with a minor in Political Science. My picture here is about Cup Noodles because it wasn’t that long ago that I moved away from home and honestly I’m no the best cook and I don’t know how to cook a lot of things either. I miss my moms cooking a lot, but Cup Noodles is always easy to make!

Lunch with my mom

Lunch at The Fish Company, Los Alamitos

I have been coming to The Original Fish Company with my mom for over 30 years. The last 10 years, we make it a priority to meet there for lunch once a month. The seafood is always fresh, the service timely and impeccable. Oh, and they have the tastiest piping hot crispy sourdough bread that is amazing!

I was about halfway into my lunch before it dawned on me to take a picture. I had to borrow a few vegetables off my moms plate for this food selfie! I always get the assorted fish skewer (halibut, swordfish, salmon) cooked on a mesquite grill.

Hong Kong Tri Tip

Proteins and flavors I love

In my past life, I was a marathon runner and a triathlete.  I needed protein and a lot of it, as I was logging over 100 miles a month just running. These days I work full time, chase my 4 1/2 year old son around and go to school.  On Friday nights I typically marinate a protein and have my husband BBQ on Saturday night. That is all the cooking he does. Anyway, I like to pair my proteins with a salad or roasted vegetables. I usually cook my steak medium for about 24 minutes and let it rest for the same amount of time.

Hong Kong Steak marinade:

1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce

1/4 cup Sherry

5 cloves minces glarlic

2 Minced Serrano chilies seeded

1 Tbsp Honey

1 Tbsp rice vinegar

1 Tbsp Chili oil or chili paste

salt & pepper

Nature’s Candy

Hello Class,

My name is Shauna Ramos and I love all different type of fruits. I am currently a Senior at CSUDH and planning to graduate in May 2018. As a child my Tia Lita used to call good tasting fruit “Nature’s Candy” as she believed Mother Nature always looks out for her children.  I love any type of fruit especially strawberries, blueberries and pineapple. There is something about the natural sweetness that makes the takes more enjoyable. My ultimate favorite fruit is “Quenepas” from Puerto Rico. I’ve only had them 3 times in my life and will never forget that taste. It’s known as a Spanish lime with it’s sweet yet tart taste.  If it is rip it is sweet like nectar but if it not rip it will be tart like a sour apple candy.

Action Snacks

Hello everyone,

My name is Naveed. I am a junior at CSUDH and plan to graduate in 2019. I am very passionate about being involved with my community and part of that is meeting with friends to discuss community issues and what we can do to create positive change. Displayed is a picture of the types of snacks we typically eat when we get together. I really love hummus, and the chips in the bowl are lime flavored. These snacks are great, because they do not cost a lot, but go a long way for a big group of people.

One of my favorite foods is kabab, specifically from Iran. Kabab is ground beef or chicken on a skewer usually paired with basmati rice or pita bread. My family is from Iran and brought this delicious recipe with them to our family. I prefer to eat it in a Persian restaurant though because then we do not have to put in the hard work to prepare it. It is hard work, but also a bonding experience with my family. When I visit my father cooking on the grill, he always gives me a sample with a nice piece of oily warm bread. I will post a picture of kabab in the future, for now, use your imagination to see this mouth-watering food.

P I Z Z A

This is John Henry Martinez Weitzel I am the odd mixed race long haired tall guy who always wears flip flops and as laid back as I look.  I will hopefully graduate next year.

On Friday the 26th of January 2018 I tried the newly renamed Ted’s Pizza

Pizza from Ted’s Pizza

While it is not the best I have ever had, or the cheapest, it is decent enough that I do not regret eating half of the whole thing…

Pizza is my favorite. Such a simple food, bread, sauce, cheese heated to 400 degrees… yet it is such a satisfying food. Perhaps because it is rich in carbs or how the grease gets on your fingers, or perhaps how the cheese stretches when you take a bite as you try not to rip it all off in one go.  You can eat it with your hands easily as the mess is minimal and it can be eaten and taken to go without fear of spilling or staining.  The way that it can droop and dangle,  awaiting a mouth to gobble it up is tempting to say the least. One slice, two, three, or 4 or more, it doesn’t seem to be too much or too little, if you want more you can just reach in and grab another as the box is your only reference on how much you ate. You eat a slice, as that is what they are counted as, since each is a triangle of heaven that, even when cold, is good enough to eat whenever and wherever you please.

Cindy: Breakfast with eggs

Eggs with veggies

My name is Cindy.  I am in my junior year of college.  I plan and hope to graduate in 2019!

I have always said that my favorite food is Italian but in the last few years, it has been impossible for me to cook it as often as I would like to.  If I eat it, is because I went to enjoy it in a restaurant.  I found that I only have the time to make breakfast and by this, I mean eggs.  So, they have become my favorite meal.  Eggs are easy, quick to prepare, and there are so many recipes with eggs.  I think, like almost anyone, I enjoy two scrambled eggs, with bacon or sausage, hash brown, and toast, but I most enjoy when I prepare them with veggies, some type of meat, and cheese with a starchy side (usually potatoes).

The above picture is how I most enjoy my eggs which is not only delish, but pretty healthy.  Here I cooked the eggs with a little olive oil.  I scrambled two eggs with spinach, yellow and red bell peppers, onion, tomato, and ham.  I did not add any salt as I topped it with feta cheese and the cheese already has salt.  I roasted the red potatoes with rosemary, black pepper and a little salt.  And I finished my dish by adding avocado.  Sometimes I will eat this dish with a salsa, but I never find the need to add toast or tortillas.  I often make this dish because it is one of my and my kids favorite breakfast.

A Ramen kind of day.

Tonkotsu Miso Ramen

Hi class,

My name is Elvira Carreto, or Elvi for short, and I’m a senior in the Labor Studies program. My first food selfie is of a half-eaten bowl of ramen noodles I had for lunch yesterday at Gomen in Stanton, CA. Ramen has become one of my favorite dishes. I grew up on daily home cooked meals, with occasional Sunday dinners eating out after mass.  Selection was very limited, as my parents were very traditional Mexicans and only stuck to what they knew.  I didn’t eat McDonalds or Chinese food till after I was out of my parents’ house and for the first few years after I moved out I explored the different diverse restaurants we were fortunate enough to have in our neighborhood.  One of my favorite dishes is Ramen.  I love the hot, spicy and savory broth, especially on cold days.  The combination of the broth and the noodles is so tasty. The meat is super tender and so flavorful, and the veggies add texture to the noodles. All the ingredients combined in a bowl is pure heaven.  I’m looking forward to all the food we are going to learn about.

see y’all in class.

Under the sea

Hi my name is Toni. I’m a senior graduating this summer. I’m extremely nervous about this class because I don’t like to blog! Maybe I’m just not used to it but I started a blog that was very difficult for me and have a Twitter account I never use. Wish me luck….
I do love food! I love to eat, I love to cook all types of food. I love spicy food particularly Mexican. I absolutely love sushi I can eat it all day everyday! After taking oceans with Dr Hall I feel guilty to admit this but I like trying different roles and even sashimi.  I make seared ahi often at home for a quick dinner.
