Throughout the Harry Potter series we are introduced to different wizard families that help or interfere with Harry’s quest to defeat Voldemort. One particular family that has captured many readers interest including myself is the Malfoy family. I think that the Malfoy family are interesting characters to focus on because unlike many families in the series they are the only family that switches sides in the end. In the novels, the Malfory’s are described to be wealthy pure-blood wizard family with a reputation of being pure-blood supremacist. However, as the novels progress from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer of stone to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow we start to see each family member mainly question what is right and wrong. Starting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer of stone, we get an idea of who the Malfoys are through characters like Harry, Hadgrid and Arthur Weasley. Through Harry’s point of view when he first meets Draco in Madam Malkin’s, Draco is described to be snotty, unsympathetic and spoiled to a point where Harry is reminded of his cousin Dudley. Hadrig gives more information about the Malfoy by stating “ There’s not a single witch or wizard that went bad that wasn’t in Slytherin” (29:47). This bit of information gives the readers an indication that the Malfoys family are considered evil and sinister because of their families desire to be Slytherin as well as their ancestors being Slytherin’s too. As for Arthur Weasley, he views the Malfoys as a power hungry and a bit conceited, especially with Lucius Malfoy.… Read the rest
There are a lot of different themes that occur in the Harry Potter series. Two themes that captured my attention while I was reading the book and watching the movies was the recurring theme of love and sacrifice. In the series, we see different types of sacrifices from various characters protecting Harry or their loved ones. This form of love and sacrifice gives the audience an understanding of what each character stands for in their fight against Lord Voldemort. This also helps Harry understand as the series progress an idea on how important he is not only as someone who can defeat Voldemort but as a friend and family member to the people around him.
The most well known sacrifice in the Harry Potter series is Lily Potter’s death. In the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer of Stone, before Lily is attacked by Lord Voldemort she cast a sacrificial protection spell on Harry to keep him safe. What draws me to this scene is the deep and pure love of a mother that ultimately saves Harry’s life. We learn how powerful her love and sacrifice for harry was because the spell was able to keep Harry safe for so many years until Voldemort was able to break the spell.
Sirius Black is another character who shows his love for Harry in the form of loyalty as well as sacrificing his own life to protect him. In the Prisoner of Azkaban, Sirius shows his love for harry by respecting his wishes not to kill Peter, even though killing peter was the reason for Sirius ability not to go insane during his time in Azkaban.… Read the rest
Ever since I was a young the idea of magic and mythical creatures have always peaked my interest. Stories like the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and The chronicles of Narnia books were stories that I grew up reading. It wasn’t until I was a little older that I was introduced to Harry Potter. My earliest memory of seeing Harry Potter was when I was 13 years old and watching tv during winter break. I didn’t know what installment I was watching back then but now that I have seen all the movies I know I was watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I didn’t pay much attention to the film because I didn’t know much about the plot that was going on throughout the movie. However one scene really captured my attention which was the bus scene with the talking head, I was both freaked out by the head but entertained by the moving bus driving crazy in the streets of London.
From then on, I wasn’t interested in reading or seeing any of the Harry Potter books or movie even though I had some friends that were telling me that I should. They were big Harry Potter fans and would often discuss about the films and movies. I ended up learning some things about Harry Potter for example I learned about the different houses at Hogwarts and what they represent and I also learned some spells like Expecto Patronus and Avada Kedavra.
It wasn’t until my Final year at Cal State Dominguez Hills that I finally took an interest in watching and reading Harry Potter.… Read the rest
