Love In Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
by Ashley Munoz
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, love is a huge theme in the novel. There are so many examples, for instance the whole drama with Ron/Hermione/Lavender, Voldemort’s back ground with his mom’s love potion and he growing up with no love; Romilda Vain and her Love potion Amortentia, Fleur and Bill getting engaged and proving their love to Mrs. Weasley, Tonks’ crush on Remus Lupin, and Harry and Ginny getting together. Unfortunately, the movies do not bring up most of these themes on love, only those essential to the plot.
With Love being such a strong theme in this novel, there was a lot of stuff that the movies took out. For example, the stories of Tonks and Remus Lupin, and Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley. Their stories were taken out of the movie, so people who only seen the movies and never read the books wouldn’t know their back stories. In the novel, Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince, we only get small hints of Tonk’s crush on Remus Lupin, since it is Harry’s point of view, we only know what he knows. Since he is a teen boy, we don’t get a lot of information except for the fact that Tonks has been depressed and was noticed by her change of appearances, for example, her vibrant colorful hair was replaced with mousy brown hair and her patronus changed. Patronus don’t usually change form unless that person had gone through some life changing event or fell in love with someone so deep it changed their patronus. In the beginning of Half Blood Prince, Harry had noticed Tonks’ patronus had changed to a wolf, showing us she loved him more than we knew. Remus kept pushing Tonks away due to his condition and age difference, also he felt like he had nothing to give her, but Tonks fought for her feelings, showing Remus that her love was true and she only wanted him to be happy, showing readers that love is the most important thing no matter how different or poor someone is, they still deserve love. Tonks showed Remus and Harry Potter fans that people who can relate to Remus, deserve love and happiness no matter the conditions.
Fleur Delacour was hated by Mrs. Weasley in the beginning of the Half-Blood Prince novel, Mrs. Weasley wanted Tonks to be with Bill. Fleur Delacour seemed snobby and rude in the book but she proved herself by staying by Bill’s side after his face was scarred by Greyback. That shows that she doesn’t care for looks, but really loves Bill and will stay by his side through the war. Because of the scene in the end where Fleur refused to leave Bill’s side and said she was still going to marry him, made Mrs. Weasley accepted Fleur as her new daughter in law. This scene, along with Tonks profession of love to Remus in front of everyone, were such two strong examples of Love that was taken out of the movie.
These two scenes represented love and war. They showed that love is conditional and true, especially during the darkest times of war. That everyone is deserving of love even if they are a werewolf. I really wish they were in the movie; however, it is understandable their stories were cut, for there was so much more information that was needed.
