In this blog I wanted to discuss a movie called The Ministers. Okay where do I start directed by Franc Reyes and has a couple of well know actors such as John Leguizamo and Havery Keitel so it shouldn’t be too bad of a film right? Wrong! I was lost like the way things jumped around was very confusing. The film was released in 2009 so it’s not that it was out dated. The story takes place in New York City and a cop sets out to defend her fathers death. Since the crime took place almost 13 years prior it’s difficult putting together the clues. I’m not sure if I would call the ministers a gang or a cult but the unity they have even violence included they were some group preying on the streets of New York. The two main characters Dante and Celeste unaware of who each other really are becomes involved. I tried relating the film to the course but it seemed like a cop story with a twist and the only cultural aspects could possibly be the added cathartic scenes. The fact that I previously stated the unity of the ministers tried to show that machoness and ideas associated with Latinos in gangs. Then there is the whole loyalty and family first with Dante and his brother but that was actually something a little different. The was some negative portrayal of of Latinos even though the setting is altered from the typical Hispanic gang of LA the view of the lead Latino male was stereotypical. I wouldn’t recommend the film.

  1. Hello,
Thank you for the information. This film sounds like it is a violent film that portrays Latinos in a negative way. You mentioned that the film had many stereotypes of Latinos as machos and gang life. Great post.
