Public Defense.

Public Defense.

As a searcher this week, I thought it would he appropriate to close out my reading of Gods Go Begging by Alfredo Vea by a posting a New York Times video in which public defenders are analyzed in a documentary narrative.

Many public defenders often lose. It seems the deck is stacked against them with having to represent poor, often illiterate, repeat offenders, yet their reverence to offer their defendants a zealous defense is seemingly unyielding. As the short documentary shows, being a public defender is not merely a career but an answer to a personally resonating calling. In the documentary clip, public defenders are even seen attending what could be described as group therapy sessions, wherein–like a sabbatical retreat–they are re-inspired toward their purpose of defending the inherently disadvantaged.

Jesse is among the ranks of such public defenders, and in our reading he demonstrate a less than sympathetic attitude toward his defendants, yet he maintains a professionally solemn reverence toward the calling.
