Manuel Munoz Interview

In the YouTube video posted above, the author Manuel Munoz speaks on his book What You See In the Dark. Manuel describes the reasons behind writing such a book and the influences of the movie, Psycho. He explains how Psycho was key to the general idea of his book because it allowed him to set his book in his hometown of Bakersfield. Manuel discusses how his central idea was merging California’s Central Valley to California’s most known city, Hollywood. He discusses how people in the Central Valley tend to look for a way out of their lifestyle and onto bigger and better things, but for this book, he inverted the tendency and made it so the outside world wanted to come into the Central Valley. Manuel discovered that a couple of location shots of Psycho were filmed in Bakersfield on the old Highway 99, which allowed him to bridge Hollywood to the Central Valley in the film, Psycho. Furthermore, Manuel discussed the difficulty of transitioning from short stories to a full-fledged novel. He noted that the novel took him 5 years and 5 drafts to complete due to his perfectionist tendencies, which made it easier for short stories but far more time consuming for a novel. All in all, this interview was interesting in that it provided the reasoning behind elements of the novel from the author himself.
